How it works

1

Step 1

Export .nbib from PubMed

In PubMed, select your records, click "Send to" → "Citation manager", and download the .nbib file. Or open an existing .nbib in any text editor and copy its contents.

2

Step 2

Paste the NBIB content

Drop the .nbib text into CiteMe — single record or a full multi-record export. The format starts with tags like PMID-, TI -, AU -.

3

Step 3

Convert to BibTeX

CiteMe parses each PubMed record (PMID, authors, title, journal, year, volume/issue, pages, DOI, abstract) and emits a clean BibTeX entry per record.

4

Step 4

Copy or download .bib

Get the BibTeX output ready for Overleaf, LaTeX, Zotero, or Mendeley. Each entry includes a generated citation key.

Frequently asked questions

What is an .nbib file?
NBIB is the PubMed citation-manager export format — the same tagged text as MEDLINE, but downloaded with a .nbib extension when you use PubMed's "Send to → Citation manager" option. Each record has tags like PMID-, TI -, AU -, JT -, DP -, AB -.
How do I export .nbib from PubMed?
Run your PubMed search, select the records (or use "All results"), click "Send to", choose "Citation manager", and the browser downloads citations.nbib. You can also export a single record from its detail page via the same menu.
Can I convert multiple PubMed records at once?
Yes. Paste a multi-record .nbib export and CiteMe parses each record into its own BibTeX entry, up to the free-tier batch limit. PubMed lets you export up to 10,000 records per .nbib file.
Does it preserve DOI, abstract, and PMID?
Yes. DOIs are emitted as the BibTeX doi field, PMID becomes the note (and contributes to the generated citation key), and the abstract is preserved as the abstract field. Author names, journal, year, volume, issue, and pages all map to standard BibTeX fields.
How is this different from MEDLINE to BibTeX?
They run the same parser — NBIB and MEDLINE are the same tagged format with different file extensions. Use this page when you exported .nbib from PubMed; use MEDLINE to BibTeX when you copied tagged records directly from a database UI.
Will the output work in Overleaf and Zotero?
Yes. The BibTeX is clean ASCII with escaped braces, ready to drop into Overleaf via Upload → .bib, or import into Zotero/Mendeley via File → Import. Each entry has a generated citation key based on first author + year + first title word.
