We believe research should be about discovery, not formatting.

CiteMe helps students and researchers generate accurate citations from real academic databases, so they can focus on what matters: their ideas.

Our Story

Academic writing is hard enough without having to worry about where a comma goes or if a title should be italicized.

We started CiteMe because we were tired of “free” citation tools that were actually link farms filled with ads and generated incorrect references. We wanted a tool that respected the user and the academic integrity of the process.

Today, CiteMe connects directly to official academic databases like CrossRef, OpenAlex, and PubMed to fetch metadata straight from the source. We don't guess — we verify. See all our data sources →

We support 60+ citation styles, browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, and a personal citation library with BibTeX/RIS export. Explore all features →

How CiteMe earns trust

We make the important parts explicit: where the data comes from, how citations are formatted, and where AI is involved.

We fetch metadata from academic databases

CiteMe pulls citation metadata from sources like OpenAlex, CrossRef, PubMed, SciELO, and Google Books instead of inventing references from a text prompt.

We format with citation rules, not guesswork

Citation output is built from verified metadata and citation-style rules. We still recommend a final review before submission because institutional requirements can vary.

AI helps with search, not fabricated citations

We use AI where it is useful — query understanding and ranking. We do not rely on a chatbot to manufacture the reference details themselves.
