Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reference a journal article in Vancouver style?

Include authors with initials (no full stops between initials), abbreviated journal name, year, volume, issue in brackets, and page range. Example: Smith JD, Johnson MR. Machine learning advances. Nat Med. 2024;29(4):123-145.

Should I abbreviate journal names in Vancouver?

Yes, Vancouver requires abbreviated journal names following the NLM (National Library of Medicine) catalogue. For example, "British Medical Journal" becomes "BMJ" and "The Lancet" stays "Lancet". Check PubMed for official abbreviations.

How do I include a DOI in Vancouver references?

Add the DOI at the end of the reference after the page numbers. Format it as "doi:" followed by the number. Example: Smith JD. Article title. J Med. 2024;15(2):34-56. doi:10.1234/example.

How do I reference an article with more than six authors?

List the first six authors followed by "et al." Example: Smith JD, Johnson MR, Williams AB, Brown T, Garcia R, Lee S, et al. Article title. J Med. 2024;29(4):123-145.

How do I reference an Epub ahead of print article?

Vancouver Formatting Rules for Journal Articles

Vancouver journal citations use numbered references. Format: Author(s). Article title. Abbreviated Journal Title. Year;Volume(Issue):Pages. doi: DOI. List up to 6 authors; for 7 or more, list the first 6 followed by "et al." Journal titles use NLM abbreviations.

Unlike APA which spells out full journal names, Vancouver uses standard NLM abbreviations (e.g., "N Engl J Med" instead of "New England Journal of Medicine"). Unlike APA, Vancouver does not italicize any part of the reference.

Common Formatting Mistake

Wrong: Smith J, Johnson M. Title. New England Journal of Medicine 2024; 390(3): 45-67.
Correct: Smith J, Johnson M. Title. N Engl J Med. 2024;390(3):45-67. doi: 10.1234/example.

Vancouver uses abbreviated journal titles (NLM format), no spaces around semicolons and colons, and a period after the abbreviated journal name.
