Vancouver Formatting Rules for Journal Articles

Vancouver journal citations use numbered references. Format: Author(s). Article title. Abbreviated Journal Title. Year;Volume(Issue):Pages. doi: DOI. List up to 6 authors; for 7 or more, list the first 6 followed by "et al." Journal titles use NLM abbreviations.

Unlike APA which spells out full journal names, Vancouver uses standard NLM abbreviations (e.g., "N Engl J Med" instead of "New England Journal of Medicine"). Unlike APA, Vancouver does not italicize any part of the reference.

Common Formatting Mistake

Wrong: Smith J, Johnson M. Title. New England Journal of Medicine 2024; 390(3): 45-67.
Correct: Smith J, Johnson M. Title. N Engl J Med. 2024;390(3):45-67. doi: 10.1234/example.

Vancouver uses abbreviated journal titles (NLM format), no spaces around semicolons and colons, and a period after the abbreviated journal name.
