Frequently asked questions

How do I cite a PubMed article in APA?
Paste the PMID into CiteMe. The tool fetches the PubMed record and formats it in APA 7th edition with authors, year, article title, journal, volume, issue, pages, and DOI when available.
Is PMID enough for an APA citation?
Usually yes. A PMID identifies a PubMed record, and that record normally includes the metadata needed for an APA reference. If the record also has a DOI, CiteMe includes it in the formatted citation.
Should APA references include PMID, PMCID, or DOI?
APA 7 prefers DOI when available. PMID and PMCID are not part of the official APA reference format, but many medical, nursing, and public-health programs ask students to keep PMID for traceability. CiteMe shows the DOI in the formatted reference; the PMID stays in your reference manager for internal tracking.
Where do I find the PMID on PubMed?
On PubMed.gov, the PMID appears directly below the article title (e.g., "PMID: 38123456"). It is also shown in PubMed search results and in most biomedical journal citation widgets.
Does APA 7 require listing all PubMed authors?
APA 7 lists up to 20 authors. For 21 or more, list the first 19, an ellipsis, then the final author. CiteMe handles the truncation automatically from the PubMed author list — useful for clinical trial papers and consortium-led research with long author lists.
Can I cite the same PMID in Vancouver or BibTeX?
Yes. Use the related PubMed tools to format the same article in Vancouver, MLA, or BibTeX without searching again.
