How do I import a DOI into EndNote?
Paste the DOI into CiteMe and download the .ris file. In EndNote: File → Import → File → choose the downloaded file → Import Option "Reference Manager (RIS)". The reference appears in your library with all fields populated.
Why not use EndNote's built-in DOI lookup?
EndNote's built-in "Find Reference Updates" uses PubMed and can miss non-biomedical papers. CiteMe queries CrossRef directly — coverage includes humanities, social sciences, engineering, and any DOI-registered publication.
Does this work with EndNote Web?
Yes. In EndNote Web: Collect → Import References → pick the .ris file → Filter "RefMan RIS". Same workflow as desktop EndNote.
Does this work for EndNote 21 and the newest releases?
Yes. EndNote 21 (released 2023) and the current release accept RIS imports via File → Import → File → "Reference Manager (RIS)". The same workflow applies back to EndNote X9 and EndNote 20, and forward to EndNote Web and EndNote for iPad — RIS is the stable interchange format across every supported version.
What happens if my DOI doesn't resolve in CrossRef?
CiteMe returns an error explaining the DOI could not be found. Common causes: typos, DOIs from non-CrossRef registrars (DataCite for datasets/software, mEDRA for some European publishers), or very recent DOIs not yet indexed. For DataCite DOIs, try /tools/doi-to-citation which queries multiple registrars.
