Tips for citing a journal article

  • 1Always include the DOI when available — it is the most reliable locator.
  • 2Include volume, issue, and page numbers for complete references.
  • 3Journal names are typically italicized (except in Vancouver and ABNT).
  • 4Some styles abbreviate journal names (IEEE, Vancouver).

Frequently asked questions

What if the journal article has no DOI?

Include the journal homepage URL (APA), the database name and URL (MLA), or end after the page numbers (print-only). Each style handles missing DOIs differently.

Should I abbreviate the journal name?

IEEE and Vancouver require standard abbreviations. APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard use full journal names. ABNT uses full names unless the abbreviation is well-known.
