Vancouver vs Harvard for Lectures

Medicine students using Vancouver sometimes receive teaching materials that their peers cite in Harvard (nursing, allied health). The decision point is always the course style guide, not the source type.

  • Vancouver: numbered (1) in-text, reference list in order of appearance, [lecture] in square brackets.
  • Harvard: author-date (Khan, 2024) in-text, alphabetical reference list, [Unpublished] tag for lectures.

If your course guide says author-date, you want Harvard lecture referencing instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cite a lecture in Vancouver style?

Vancouver treats lectures as unpublished works. Format: #. Lecturer. Title of lecture [lecture]. Institution; Year Month Day. Example: 1. Khan S. Antimicrobial stewardship in primary care [lecture]. University of Manchester; 2024 Oct 10.

Does Vancouver have an official rule for lectures?

ICMJE Vancouver does not give a canonical lecture format — lectures are out of scope because the style assumes peer-reviewed biomedical literature. Most UK and Australian medical schools follow the adaptation above, placing [lecture] after the title and including the institution and delivery date.

How do I cite lecture slides hosted on a VLE (Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle)?

Add the VLE platform and access date after the institution: 2. Williams K. Cardiac auscultation [lecture slides]. University of Birmingham; 2024 Nov 20. Available from: Blackboard.

How do I cite a recorded lecture (Panopto, YouTube, internal video)?

If the lecture is available as a recording, cite it as a video rather than a lecture. Use the Vancouver video format with platform and URL. The exception: internal-only recordings on institutional systems are cited as lectures with the access platform noted.

Do I need to cite ward round teaching or bedside teaching in Vancouver?

Personal teaching encounters are usually cited as personal communications, not formal lectures. Use an in-text citation only: (J. Smith, personal communication, 12 March 2024) — do not include them in the reference list unless your assignment brief specifies otherwise.

How do I cite a Grand Rounds or case presentation in Vancouver?

Treat it as a lecture with the presenter as author. Format: #. Presenter. Case title [grand rounds]. Institution; Year Month Day. Include the department when it helps a reader locate the source (e.g., Department of Cardiology).
