Tips for citing a website

  • 1Always include the URL so readers can locate the source.
  • 2Check whether an access date is required — it depends on the style.
  • 3If no author is listed, most styles let you start with the page title.
  • 4Look for a publication or last-updated date on the page.

Frequently asked questions

Do all citation styles require an access date for websites?

No. APA 7 only requires an access date for content that changes over time. MLA makes it optional. Harvard, Vancouver, and ABNT require it for all online sources. Check your specific style guide.

How do I cite a website with no author?

Most styles let you start the reference with the page title. In APA, italicize the title; in MLA, put it in quotation marks. The organization behind the site can sometimes serve as the author.
