Special Cases for APA Report Citations

Organization as author and publisher

When the author and publisher are the same organization, omit the publisher. Example: American Psychological Association. (2020). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.).

Reports with no report number

Simply omit the report number from the citation. The format remains the same: Agency. (Year). Title. Publisher. URL

Abbreviating organization names in-text

Spell out the full name the first time with the abbreviation in brackets: (National Institutes of Health [NIH], 2024). Use the abbreviation in subsequent citations: (NIH, 2024).

Reports retrieved from databases

If the report has a DOI, include it instead of a URL. If retrieved from a database without a DOI, provide the URL of the report's landing page rather than the database URL.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cite a government report in APA?

List the government agency as the author, followed by the year in parentheses, the report title in italics, the report number in parentheses if available, the parent department as publisher, and the URL. Example: National Institute of Mental Health. (2024). Mental health statistics (Report No. NIH-24-8088). U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. https://www.nimh.nih.gov/statistics

Do I need a report number for APA citations?

Include the report number in parentheses after the title if one is available — for example, (Report No. NIH-24-8088) or (Technical Report EPA-2023-04). If the report does not have a number, simply omit it. The citation is still valid without one.

How do I cite a WHO or UN report in APA?

Use the full organization name as the author — do not abbreviate on first use. Example: World Health Organization. (2024). World mental health report: Transforming mental health for all. WHO. https://www.who.int/publications. In-text, spell out the name the first time: (World Health Organization, 2024), then you may abbreviate in subsequent citations: (WHO, 2024).

Climate change impact assessment for coastal regions (Technical Report EPA-2023-04). Environmental Protection Agency. https://www.epa.gov/reports
