Narrative Citation

An in-text citation where the author's name is incorporated into the sentence as part of the narrative, with only the year in parentheses. Contrasts with parenthetical citations where both author and year are in parentheses.

Why it matters

Narrative citations give prominence to the author, which is appropriate when the researcher's identity or authority is relevant to the point being made. They add variety to your writing by offering an alternative to parenthetical citations, helping to avoid monotonous citation patterns. Skilled academic writers use both narrative and parenthetical citations strategically.

How to use

Write the author's last name as part of your sentence and place the year in parentheses immediately after: "Smith (2024) demonstrated that..." For direct quotes, add the page number after the quoted text: Smith (2024) stated that "climate change is urgent" (p. 15). Use narrative citations when discussing a specific researcher's contribution or when contrasting findings from different authors.

In academic writing

Narrative citations are used in APA, MLA, and most author-date styles. They are particularly common in literature reviews where you discuss each author's contributions individually. Style guides recommend varying between narrative and parenthetical citations throughout your paper to maintain readability and emphasize different aspects of the cited research.

Common mistakes

  • Including the author's name both in the sentence and in the parenthetical citation, resulting in redundancy: "Smith found that... (Smith, 2024)."
  • Forgetting to put the year in parentheses immediately after the author's name in APA style.
  • Using narrative citations for every source, which makes the writing feel like a list of "X said... Y found... Z argued..." rather than a synthesized argument.

Example

Smith (2024) argues that climate change requires immediate action.
